Republic of Moldova joins the European Patent Organisation
On 1 June 2026, the Republic of Moldova became the 40th member state of the European Patent Organisation (EPO), following its accession to the European Patent Convention (EPC). In so doing, Moldova is the first former validation state to become a full EPC member.
From 1 June 2026, European patent applications automatically designate Moldova, removing the need to pay a separate validation fee for applications filed on or after that date, including relevant PCT applications. This simplifies procedures and aligns Moldova with the standard EPC system.
The changes do not apply retroactively. Applications filed before 1 June 2026, as well as divisional applications based on them, remain subject to the previous validation requirements, including payment of validation fees.
Following grant, national validation requirements in Moldova will remain in place, including translations and renewal fee payments to the national State Agency for Intellectual Property (AGEPI).
Key Benefits for Applicants
Automatic coverage: Moldova is now automatically designated in all European patent applications filed from 1 June 2026.
Cost savings: No separate validation fee is required for Moldova.
Simplified process: Streamlined filing will be aligned with standard EPC procedures.
Reduced risk: Moldova’s accession eliminates the possibility of inadvertently omitting this jurisdiction from protection.
Wider protection: Broader geographic coverage is provided within a single European patent application.
