Duration
The Law which is currently force, dating back to 1955, establishes a patent term of between 5 and 10 years from the date the application is allowed for patents granted in respect of inventions, improvements, drawings and industrial models. The validity period for introductory patents is only 5 years, whilst revalidation patents expire upon expiration of the patent in its country of origin, as long as this term is less than 10 years. In such cases, there is no possibility of filing an extension to the term.

The first annual tax is payable on filing an application, but further annuities are not due until the patent is granted. At that time, a fee for grant and accumulated annuities must be paid jointly. Subsequent annuities are then payable on each anniversary of the filing date.
