The UAE Patent Office has recently issued a notification to the effect that search and examination fees for patent applications filed between 2011 and 2013 must be paid within 90 days from the date of the announcement on 1 November 2014.

Furthermore, moving forward, examination fees must be paid in respect of all patent applications filed on or after 1 November 2014, either upon filing the application if all of the filing formalities are complied with at that time, or within 90 days from the filing date upon completion of the formal requirements of the application.

It is also necessary to pay all due annuities for the years 2011 to 2013 and to submit a CD and a hard copy of the current patent description and abstract in the English language. In addition, the applicant must ensure that the submitted documents include the relevant bibliographic data in the English language and in the official form required by the UAE patent Office.

If the relevant action specified above is not completed in due time, the application will be deemed to have been abandoned.

This development comes in the light of the UAE's recent collaboration with South Korea, the latter of which has dispatched patent examiners to the UAE Patent Office to assist in the construction of an infrastructure for the management of patent applications.
