The current Intellectual Property Law in Rwanda is dated 26th October 2009, and entered into force following its publication on 14th December 2009.  The current law provides that trade mark registrations are valid for 10 years from the application date.

Trade marks filed under the old law which was in force prior to 2009 did not have to be renewed at any time.  The provisions of the current law require trade marks filed under the old law to be renewed within 10 years of the date of entry into force of the current law.

We have been made aware of a news item currently being circulated by another party, which reports that the renewal date for trade marks registered under the old law will be 26th October 2019.  However, the Registry in Rwanda has confirmed that trade marks registered under the old law will be due for renewal on 14th December 2019, and not on 26th October 2019.  We expect the Registry to issue an official notice in this regard shortly.
