TRADE MARK INFORMATION  
Classification There is no formal classification system in Canada, and applicants simply submit a list of goods and/or services they wish to cover
Single class
Goods and services can be registered
Priority Convention priority can be claimed
Renewal 15 years from the registration date, and every 15 years thereafter
There is a 6 month grace period
Use provisions Applications filed on the basis of intent to use must file a statement of actual use once the application has been accepted, in order for the certificate of registration to issue.  There is a deadline of 12 months from the notice of allowance for submitting this document, and six 6 month extensions are available
PATENT INFORMATION  
Types of Patent Substantive with or without priority;
PCT national phase
Priority Convention priority can be claimed
Duration 20 years from the effective filing date
Annuities Annuities are payable on the second and each subsequent anniversary of the effective filing date
DESIGN INFORMATION  
Priority Convention priority can be claimed
Duration 10 years from the registration date, subject to the payment of a renewal fee after the first 5 years
Renewal A renewal fee is payable on the fifth anniversary of the registration date in order to extend the term for a further 5 years
